To: Our Friends in the Kingdom Hall who are Jehovah's Witnesses
We have often had questions_about_Watchtower_doctrines and we have appreciated all of the sincere Jehovah's Witnesses who have stopped by to speak with us about them.
Usually there has not been enough time to finish any real discussion, so we were pleased to join with one couple for weekly bible studies in which they promised to answer all of the questions that we had.
Although we preferred to simply ask our_questions, we agreed to follow our friends through a bible study course using this Watchtower bible study guide called: "What Does the Bible Really Teach?" And although it was not what we had been promised, we reluctantly agreed to set aside our questions until the issues came up in the study materials.
Well .... we did all of the homework that we were asked to do ...... and more... We studied and compared what the New World Translation says, we read various other Watchtower books and pamphlets, and as you can see, we followed the Watchtower study guide precisely, even colour-coding our answers to help us find the main points that we were being taught.
The first question in the study guide asks why is it important for us to ask questions? The study guide itself tells us to not stop asking questions until we find satisfying, reliable answers.
Of course that is exactly what we were looking for .... answers ... and our friends promised to provide those answers. We agreed with our friends that the bible would be our final authority and that all things would therefore be proven ... from the bible.
But, do you know what happened?
Right from the beginning, our friends began teaching things that we had never read before in the bible. For example, they said that the Holy Spirit is not a person in the Godhead, but instead, it is God's Active Force. Well, we wouldn't have a problem with that, if we could prove that it were true, but - because God's Word (the bible) is the source of all truth - we had agreed that everything we accepted must be found in God's Word, and so we asked: Where does the bible say that the Holy Spirit is God's Active Force?
Our friends weren't able to answer this question, but they insisted that it was true, even though it wasn't in the bible. So, you can probably understand our disappointment at this violation of our agreements:
the first thing we had agreed - was that our questions would be answered, and
the second - was that all answers would come directly from the bible
Before our second study, our friends talked with someone from the Kingdom Hall and decided not to answer all of the questions as they had promised, but to simply follow the study guide instead. Why do you suppose the Watchtower Organization would not want our friends to answer our questions?
Again, we were disappointed.
So after four hours of studying together, and a few more hours preparing for the studies, we ended up with a six page list of unanswered questions! Many of the questions, our friends couldn't answer at all. The rest of them, they said, would be answered later during the course of our study, even though the answers were only in the Watchtower literature and not in the bible itself. This was disappointing because, as I mentioned, they had promised that everything would be proven from the bible.
The next disappointment was that our friends didn't show up for the third bible study. So, we called them and only then discovered that they wouldn't be coming back. They acknowledged that they had spoken with others at the Kingdom Hall prior to deciding not to come back for any more studies with us.
As you might imagine, we found this process to be somewhat frustrating, as well as disappointing, because:
We had done everything that we were asked to do.
We agreed to attend weekly studies for the next few months.
We agreed to follow the study manual that our friends preferred to use.
We did our homework.
We listened to the teachings.
And we only asked questions that pertained to the things that they were teaching us as they came up in the lesson.
And we did all of this because our friends promised to answer the questions that we told them no other Jehovah's Witness had been able to answer.
So, here we have six pages of questions now - and these are only from the two weeks of bible studies with our friends - we have many more questions that we would like to add later.
But maybe you can help us find the answers to these.
We would welcome any response or comment from you, by phone, email, video reply, or personal visit - especially if you are a Jehovah's Witness.
One thing we would like to say is that almost ALL of the Jehovah's witnesses we have met have been very nice people. These people are hard working, kind, honest, and sincere. What grieves us is how the Watchtower Organization seems to take advantage of these people.
Our one friend lost her daughter in a tragic car accident, and she may feel guilty about her role in that crash. She spoke several times about her longing desire to see her daughter again in the resurrection. The Watchtower Organization has given her hope that she will she her daughter again - IF she is a faithful Jehovah's Witness.
But the bible itself assures us that her daughter will be resurrected. The real tragedy in this is that - in order to be a part of that resurrection herself - our friend is trusting in the Watchtower Organization instead of trusting in the bible. And, as a result, our friend is not being told the truth about being with her daughter again. In fact, she is being kept away from the very truth that would let her see her daughter again.
In Ephesians 5:21, the bible tells us to prove all things; hold fast that which is good.
If the truth is important to you, then you have to be able to answer these questions, and you have to be willing to obey God's command to prove all things.
Thank you for considering our questions. And thank you, in advance, for contacting us with your answers to them.
