Lisa's Thoughts on the Depravation of Literature

I personally find literature, and the presentation of it, particularly interesting.  I wonder how many people have stopped to think about the power of words.  Reading is a prime stimulus for one's imagination; and written documentation, society's prosecuting defense.

Considering these thoughts, I wonder how many people have stopped to think about literary authors and the incredible power and influence abstractly given them, which could change society.  Authors of children's literature have an even stronger influential role.  History has shown – ex. Hitler's Youth – that young people are gullible and easily persuaded to new ideas.  Yet given time, the idea(s) becomes theirs; and to anyone/thing with a contrary idea or belief – Watch Out!

It is this power given to – specifically children's – authors that dangles society at a 3-way crossroads with possibilities for destruction, preservation, or rejuvenation.

Unfortunately, our society is in a continual state of destruction; yet, not just the result of the Law of Entropy (2nd law of thermodynamics), but a seemingly willing attitude of rebellion to truth and its authority.

Though not entirely to blame for this, are modern children's authors – even back a few decades ago.

Consider some downfalls of current-day society and its connection with children's literature:

  1. Breakdown of Family Authority – and into society

Feminist Movement – female superiority to male

Book

Example

Bernstein Bears

Papa Bear is the "stupid" one; kids and mama laugh at him

Wiser than the King

A female protagonist; yet underlying feminism

I Corinthians 11:3

But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.

  1. Divorce

Book

Example

Wiser than the King

Abby hints at divorce in seeking the king's promise before the wedding

Matthew 19:6

Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

  1. Respect for Authority/Parents

Parents made to look like wimps; no proper administration of discipline

Book

Example

Robert Munsch –

Up, Up, Down

Tyya is blatantly rude in dealing with her parents (nyah, nyah, nyah)

Judy Blume –

Tales of 4th gr. nothing

Child has temper tantrums, lies, and mouths-off at mother

Exodus 20:12

Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.

  1. "Mom" & "Dad" banished in California

http://www.wnd.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=58130

Book

Example

Johnny Valentine –One Dad, Two Dads, Brown Dad, Blue Dads

A play on Dr. Seuss titles; it intrigues kids and lures them into fallaciously believing something abominable to truth, is funny.

Ken Setterington –

Mom and Mum are getting married!

The very use of an exclamation mark in the title is an attention-grabber for kids; it will excite them to believe the story.

Leviticus 18:22

Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.

Yes, words are very powerful.  As a people, we once clung to each rung of truth while monkey-barring across a deathly ravine.  It was and is hard work to stay on those monkey bars of truth.  It requires temperance, longsuffering, and faith.  But at some point in history, someone questioned the truth, rebelled against the truth; they let go of the monkey bars and started to freefall into the dark ravine below.  Admittedly, it looks more fun to somersault and freefall in air – the bottom isn't visible, so there must not be one, they say.  The only other solution is to stay on the bars…slowly moving forward one rung at a time until you cross the ravine and reach land on the other side.  It is tiring; sweat drips down the brow.

Unfortunately, much literature today is penned by those in freefall.  They have little or no truth/wisdom to share, because they have abandoned it.  They deceive themselves into believing that they are in control of their direction – they can somersault, twist, or dive.  In reality, their maneuvers only mask the fact that they are moving in only one direction – downward.  They effectively dismiss all ideas that there might be a bottom to the ravine.  They can't see it and life is too thrilling to think about such negative things, anyway.  Yet occasionally, crevices and gnarly, sharp rocks appear from the darkness, instantly killing some free fallers, early and unexpectedly.  These deaths sober other free fallers for a time, but they'd rather not know the ending to their own journey.   Besides what all logic tells them will occur (death), they want to be "surprised".  But those who are clinging to the monkey bars above see where they are going.  There is light up above.  The solid ground on the other side is visible.  There are no surprises.

Laughter, mock, and scorn echoes from the ravine.  Truth-clinging parents carry their children when they are born.  But when they grow and become of age when they can understand the truth for themselves, they must grab those monkey bars and hang on.  The parents can support them along the way, but they are too heavy to carry.  Because the muscles of the children are weak and undeveloped, the children who are grasping the truth become easy targets for free fallers.

Those freefalling authors, skilled in child psychology, use subtle manipulation to encourage children away from their parents…and the truth…one hand…then the other, until the child too is joining in the "fun" – falling into destruction and laughing at his parents above.

But Truth has supplied a grievous consequence to anyone that should encourage children in the like:

Matthew 18:6

But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.

It is with this warning in mind, that I see danger in many of today's literature – specifically for children.  What great responsibility a person undertakes when supplying Truth, Knowledge, and Wisdom to a child via literary works.

Sometimes I wonder if there is really a need for children's fables.

The Truth contains many very interesting stories which pique a child's interest, while at the same time provides eternal nourishment; the words themselves are

"For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh."Proverbs 4:22.

The "Berean Research Institute" is a scripture-based, family-oriented area of cyber-space wherein men, women and children can research beliefs and doctrines that impact their assembly, ministry and/or personal lives.

We encourage all to fear God and to keep his commandments by searching the scriptures daily and by being doers of the word.

Many people today claim to be Christians, disciples of Jesus, but fail to continue in his word as commanded in John 8:31, and therefore are deceiving even themselves.  (James1:22)  The result of such deception will be exclusion from the Kingdom of God (Matt 7:21-23 and Matt 25:8-12).

Not everyone ... shall enter the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. (Matt 7:21)

If you consider yourself to be a Pentecostal, Baptist, Catholic, JW, Adventist - even a life-long one - and are convinced that you are on your way to heaven, we encourage you to consider some of the biblical doctrines that we examine in these articles and videos - and be SURE that you are on your way to heaven.

That is our ultimate goal for you - that every one of you obtains eternal life!!
