Mel Gibson - Our "Christian" Hero?

1. We have no dispute with the assertions that Mel Gibson is a Catholic and that Mel Gibson is a very popular and a very influential man. However, we reject outright any suggestion that Mel Gibson is an advocate for the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
2. It should be sufficient to say, "I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes." (Ps 101:3) Even before The Passion of the Christ, Mel Gibson violated this commandment and popularized the violation of it for millions of movie-goers and television viewers (many of whom would claim to be Christians).
3. Christians must not fence-sit on the issue of Mel Gibson's "Passion" movie or any other of the like. This article can provide many of the reasons why we consider The Passion to be a wicked movie. Prove all things hold fast that which is good (I Thess 5:21)
4. The Passion is a Catholic movie to the core. Consider that:
a. the movie follows the fourteen stations of the cross
b. Mary asks Jesus to let her die with him (Co-redemptress)
c. Jesus gains strength from Mary's presence several times, without which he would have been unable to continue
d. Only Jesus and Mary are able to "see" the woman who plays Satan
e. Mary is mystically linked with Jesus as he is suspended from shackles in the room below her floor.
f. Mary is strong; Jesus is weak
g. Peter kneels before Mary and confesses he has denied Christ. She reaches out in forgiveness and he runs away saying he's not worthy. (But, Peter didn't sin against Mary.)
h. Mary kisses Jesus' feet on the cross and steps back with blood on her face and dripping into her mouth (literal transubstantiation)
i. a flashback of the Last Supper, as Jesus is crucified, clearly teaches the purpose of the Mass and the unfinished work of the cross.
j. Mary cradles the dead body of Jesus (Pieta) at the foot of the cross
k. much more
5. Our family doesn't have TV or go to movies, but even if we did, we would not watch the Passion. It is restricted, brutally violent, anti-Semitic (Jewish children morph into devils that chase Judas to suicide), unscriptural (almost no end to this list) and created and acted by ungodly men and women (can a corrupt tree produce good fruit? - Matt 7:18). That's barely the beginning - brief and concise, but much documentation is available.
6. Nonetheless, even "Christians" swoon around the stardom of Mel Gibson and promote his work as the cutting edge of evangelical methods to reach the lost. One example of this occurred at Focus on the Family, when James Dobson hosted Mel Gibson during exhibition of his film. Many flocked to take his photo and to acquire his autograph.
7. Even since producing the Passion of the Christ, Mel Gibson has been in the news for moral indiscretion. His DUI charge and rehabilitation progress have been widely publicized. But he remains in the saddle. In 2006 his movie "Apocalypto" is perhaps the most graphic portrayal of torture methods and bloody screen gore that has ever been recorded on film.
8. The harlot church continues to reap big gains in several ways from the production of the Passion of The Christ. Mel Gibson is not an advocate for the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We pray that you will take a decisive stand on this in opposition to such "entertainment".
